Behind The Baby

For those of you who are new to the page, or you’ve been following our journey but you don’t know much about us… my name is Shelby, I’m 24, and I’m a first time mom.

When I got pregnant last year, I had no idea where to start or how to mom – enter @tryingtomom ! I started this blog and my Instagram page to share pictures of my daughter and to share stories of mom life. But what I didn’t expect, was how much support and love I would get from other moms… strangers, on social media.

I am currently engaged, and planning my dream wedding, with my sweet fiancé, Neil. We have been dating since our sophomore year in high school. We both went to different university’s after high school, and did the whole long distance thing. Neil even did internships in different states twice, but I visited a lot! After Neil graduated, we moved in together and got a puppy! {Actually we got our puppy, Zoey, a little bit before he graduated because we were so excited to get a dog of our own lol}. We lived in an apartment for about a year, and then we bought our own home! Buying our first home was super exciting, and we spend a lot of our weekends doing house projects… even though we have lived here for almost 2 years now.

In April 2017, Neil proposed to me in our backyard… he had the sweetest set up and surprised me to tears!! {Let me know if you guys want to hear more about that!} And about 2 weeks later we found out that I was pregnant!

Becoming a mom at 24 was a sweet surprise for both of us. We had just recently had a long conversation about when we wanted to get married, and how long after that we wanted to have kids. One missed period and a drug store pregnancy test confirmed what I thought was just paranoia, and all of our plans for the future changed. After a whirlwind of emotions between Neil and I, we settled on super nervous & super excited!

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I’m an extreme planner. I have a million lists, notes, and ideas saved in my phone. From grocery lists, to weekly meal schedules, to home projects… the list goes on and on. So when I got pregnant, I felt completely unprepared. I have ALWAYS wanted to be a mom. I really thought I was going to just thrive at motherhood. But I only had 8 months {give or take} to plan, and to change our life plans before this brand new baby was here. So we turned our lives upside down. We painted bedrooms, we installed carpet in our strictly hardwood floors home, we installed new cordless & room darkening blinds, we meal prepped and froze a ton of meals, we cut back our spending on things for us and started spending on our unborn child… I mean the amount of “nesting” that I did before Amelia was born is unreal.

After a long & trying pregnancy, our beautiful baby girl was here. There is not enough planning in the world that could have prepared us for the amount of sleepless nights and sweet baby cuddles we would receive. The love I had for Amelia when she was born was so strong. But over the last 8+ months, it has grown into a kind of love that knows no words.

I have always dreamed of being a mom. God sent me this beautiful baby girl, and made all of my dreams come true. She is seriously an angel.

Over the course of early motherhood, I have learned SO much about babies, being a mom, and mom life in general. I love being able to share my experiences all of my followers!

Alright guys… as usual, leave me a comment if you have any questions, want to share your own experiences with social media / mom life / babies / etc.

Can’t wait to hear from you!!

Spring Must-Haves For Mama & Baby

Happy Spring!!!

It may not feel like spring yet for a lot of you, but I am SO looking forward to warmer weather. In Michigan, we had a few teaser spring days, and it got me super excited. Amelia and I spent those days outside playing all day. But those spring vibes got me feeling like I wasn’t prepared! Here are a few of my spring must-have’s for mama and baby.

Cute sunhat

I am LOVING this donut hat!! I think it’s adorable. I saw it on Jade Roper’s insta {my favorite girl from the bachelor} and I instantly ordered it for Amelia. Babies just have the softest, most sensitive skin and they definitely need a sunhat for those days spent outside this spring!

Sandals {for baby}

So. Many. Cute. Baby. Shoes!!! I got Amelia 3 pairs already. Someone needs to take my credit cards, because I will spend all my money on these cute shoes LOL…

I just about died when I saw these pink fuzzy slides, had to have.

These gold fringe sandals are super cute and will go with a lot of her outfits.

Then I also got these white flower jelly sandals because they will match everything in her closet.

The best part is that they were all under $10!! Why aren’t my shoes that cheap?

Sandals {for mama}

I am a personal believer in the phrase “treat yo self”… my wallet may not agree but, ya know.

So I’m all about treating myself to new shoes. But a lot of things have changed in the past year. Last year I was treating myself to Tory Burch sandals, and this year I’m looking for some comfier shoes!

I love these Birkenstocks because they’re super comfy, but they’re also fun and come in a bunch of fun colors.

I am a fan of comfort… but these espadrille wedges are to die.

Sunscreen

If it ever starts to get sunny and warm around here, we will be needing some sunscreen for that soft perfect skin.

I love everything from The Honest Company, so I picked up their sunscreen.

But I also got some sunscreen from Babyganics as well. I’ve heard great things about this brand so I’m excited to try it.

Backpack

I love my current diaper bag, but I’m dreaming of a backpack for the warmer days. I just can’t wait to run around all day and do all the fun warm weather adventures with Amelia. So I’m really wanting a good back pack diaper bag. These are a few of my favorites:

This Freshly Picked backpack is adorable. I love the black leather – functional & super cute!

This Chelsea Skip Hop backpack is the backpack version of my current diaper bag. Love it.

But this is my dream backpack. Lily Jade is so functional and SO darn cute! I follow them on insta and I’m always sending Neil all their stuff {dropping hints real hard} !! I love this because it can be worn as a backpack or over the shoulder. And is it really even a diaper bag? I can’t tell!

Baby carrier

If your babe is still small enough for a baby carrier, then these are so great for spring. I’ve only had the pleasure of wearing mine around the house, but once it gets a little nicer out and Amelia doesn’t need to be all bundled up, I can’t wait to wear her around outside. She loves being in it.

I bought this Ergo Baby cool air with breathable mesh for those warmer days.

I am SO looking forward to warmer weather! We can’t wait to spend time in our backyard grilling and going to the zoo and the park by our house!

What are your spring must-have’s?? What are you most excited to do in warmer weather?!

Let me know in the comments!

Amelia’s Nursery

Creating the perfect nursery was so important to me.

When I was pregnant, it felt like a way that I could connect to my growing baby. Since she wasn’t here yet, I couldn’t do anything for her. So it was important to me that she had a warm and welcoming nursery to come home to. That was something that I could do for her.

Here’s a picture of her empty room, while we were painting. This was also before we put carpet down and got new blackout blinds. {Our whole house has the original hardwood floors from when it was built, but we wanted carpeting in the bedrooms… especially for when Amelia starts crawling!}

Neil and I were so excited to pick out her furniture. We did our registry through Babies R Us because of the perks they had for money back afterwards, so we went there to look at furniture. I knew I wanted all white, and we found this adorable set that we both loved. It’s all convertible, which is what we wanted. The crib can change from a crib to a toddler bed, and then eventually, into a double bed. The dresser has a changing table topper on it, which can be easily taken off once she gets older!

Creating this nursery was so fun for me and I love the way that it turned out!

I also have to mention that I could not have done it without the help of my mama / Amelia’s nana! She went shopping with me so many times to help pick out all of the perfect pieces!!
