Behind The Baby

For those of you who are new to the page, or you’ve been following our journey but you don’t know much about us… my name is Shelby, I’m 24, and I’m a first time mom.

When I got pregnant last year, I had no idea where to start or how to mom – enter @tryingtomom ! I started this blog and my Instagram page to share pictures of my daughter and to share stories of mom life. But what I didn’t expect, was how much support and love I would get from other moms… strangers, on social media.

I am currently engaged, and planning my dream wedding, with my sweet fiancé, Neil. We have been dating since our sophomore year in high school. We both went to different university’s after high school, and did the whole long distance thing. Neil even did internships in different states twice, but I visited a lot! After Neil graduated, we moved in together and got a puppy! {Actually we got our puppy, Zoey, a little bit before he graduated because we were so excited to get a dog of our own lol}. We lived in an apartment for about a year, and then we bought our own home! Buying our first home was super exciting, and we spend a lot of our weekends doing house projects… even though we have lived here for almost 2 years now.

In April 2017, Neil proposed to me in our backyard… he had the sweetest set up and surprised me to tears!! {Let me know if you guys want to hear more about that!} And about 2 weeks later we found out that I was pregnant!

Becoming a mom at 24 was a sweet surprise for both of us. We had just recently had a long conversation about when we wanted to get married, and how long after that we wanted to have kids. One missed period and a drug store pregnancy test confirmed what I thought was just paranoia, and all of our plans for the future changed. After a whirlwind of emotions between Neil and I, we settled on super nervous & super excited!

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I’m an extreme planner. I have a million lists, notes, and ideas saved in my phone. From grocery lists, to weekly meal schedules, to home projects… the list goes on and on. So when I got pregnant, I felt completely unprepared. I have ALWAYS wanted to be a mom. I really thought I was going to just thrive at motherhood. But I only had 8 months {give or take} to plan, and to change our life plans before this brand new baby was here. So we turned our lives upside down. We painted bedrooms, we installed carpet in our strictly hardwood floors home, we installed new cordless & room darkening blinds, we meal prepped and froze a ton of meals, we cut back our spending on things for us and started spending on our unborn child… I mean the amount of “nesting” that I did before Amelia was born is unreal.

After a long & trying pregnancy, our beautiful baby girl was here. There is not enough planning in the world that could have prepared us for the amount of sleepless nights and sweet baby cuddles we would receive. The love I had for Amelia when she was born was so strong. But over the last 8+ months, it has grown into a kind of love that knows no words.

I have always dreamed of being a mom. God sent me this beautiful baby girl, and made all of my dreams come true. She is seriously an angel.

Over the course of early motherhood, I have learned SO much about babies, being a mom, and mom life in general. I love being able to share my experiences all of my followers!

Alright guys… as usual, leave me a comment if you have any questions, want to share your own experiences with social media / mom life / babies / etc.

Can’t wait to hear from you!!

Spring Must-Haves For Mama & Baby

Happy Spring!!!

It may not feel like spring yet for a lot of you, but I am SO looking forward to warmer weather. In Michigan, we had a few teaser spring days, and it got me super excited. Amelia and I spent those days outside playing all day. But those spring vibes got me feeling like I wasn’t prepared! Here are a few of my spring must-have’s for mama and baby.

Cute sunhat

I am LOVING this donut hat!! I think it’s adorable. I saw it on Jade Roper’s insta {my favorite girl from the bachelor} and I instantly ordered it for Amelia. Babies just have the softest, most sensitive skin and they definitely need a sunhat for those days spent outside this spring!

donuthat

Sandals {for baby}

So. Many. Cute. Baby. Shoes!!! I got Amelia 3 pairs already. Someone needs to take my credit cards, because I will spend all my money on these cute shoes LOL…

I just about died when I saw these pink fuzzy slides, had to have.

slides

These gold fringe sandals are super cute and will go with a lot of her outfits.

fringesandals

Then I also got these white flower jelly sandals because they will match everything in her closet.

whitesandals

The best part is that they were all under $10!! Why aren’t my shoes that cheap?

Sandals {for mama}

I am a personal believer in the phrase “treat yo self”… my wallet may not agree but, ya know.

So I’m all about treating myself to new shoes. But a lot of things have changed in the past year. Last year I was treating myself to Tory Burch sandals, and this year I’m looking for some comfier shoes!

I love these Birkenstocks because they’re super comfy, but they’re also fun and come in a bunch of fun colors.

birks

I am a fan of comfort… but these espadrille wedges are to die.

espad.jpg

Sunscreen

If it ever starts to get sunny and warm around here, we will be needing some sunscreen for that soft perfect skin.

I love everything from The Honest Company, so I picked up their sunscreen.

honest.jpeg

But I also got some sunscreen from Babyganics as well. I’ve heard great things about this brand so I’m excited to try it.

Backpack

I love my current diaper bag, but I’m dreaming of a backpack for the warmer days. I just can’t wait to run around all day and do all the fun warm weather adventures with Amelia. So I’m really wanting a good back pack diaper bag. These are a few of my favorites:

This Freshly Picked backpack is adorable. I love the black leather – functional & super cute!

fresh

This Chelsea Skip Hop backpack is the backpack version of my current diaper bag. Love it.

chelsea.jpg

But this is my dream backpack. Lily Jade is so functional and SO darn cute! I follow them on insta and I’m always sending Neil all their stuff {dropping hints real hard} !! I love this because it can be worn as a backpack or over the shoulder. And is it really even a diaper bag? I can’t tell!

Baby carrier

If your babe is still small enough for a baby carrier, then these are so great for spring. I’ve only had the pleasure of wearing mine around the house, but once it gets a little nicer out and Amelia doesn’t need to be all bundled up, I can’t wait to wear her around outside. She loves being in it.

I bought this Ergo Baby cool air with breathable mesh for those warmer days.

ergo

I am SO looking forward to warmer weather! We can’t wait to spend time in our backyard grilling and going to the zoo and the park by our house!

What are your spring must-have’s?? What are you most excited to do in warmer weather?!

Let me know in the comments!

Postpartum Fashion

The hardest time for looking good and feeling good, for me at least, is after pregnancy. You were a huge human incubator for 9 months, and now you just gave birth and you are in an awkward phase. All of your friends and family want to come over and see the baby, and you want to look and feel good about yourself, but all of your pre-pregnancy clothes don’t fit yet and your maternity clothes are just too big. This is something that I never even thought about. During my last 3 months of postpartum recovery, I have come to find the BEST postpartum fashion staples that every mama should have in her closet.

legging

First things first, leggings. All day, every day. Maternity leggings are the worst. I definitely didn’t want to keep wearing those postpartum. Some of the leggings I had pre-pregnancy were not high waisted enough, and after having a c-section I wanted ones that would completely cover my incision. So I found these Lululemon Align leggings. They are the greatest leggings in the world. They’re super high waisted, they’re really soft, and they’re thick and tight around your belly. I live in these leggings. They come in crop too!

tank

Nursing tank tops are a must for breastfeeding moms. I love the Jessica Simpson nursing tank top. It has easy snap closures on either side and a shelf bra on the inside. I love that it’s cute and has lace around the top, too. Some nursing tanks that I’ve seen just aren’t cute. It’s also really soft and comfy so I end up sleeping in it sometimes, which is great. It also holds its shape really well, and doesn’t get stretched out easily. Everything you could ask for in a nursing tank, it has.

twisttop

Twist front sweaters are my favorite postpartum staple. They’re comfy, they look good with a pair of leggings, and most importantly, the twist in the front is super flattering over your postpartum belly. These ones from Nordstrom are my favorite. {Plus they come in a ton of different colors!}

blackdress

Every mama wants to feel sexy after giving birth. I love this black dress from Nordstrom. It’s thin and stretchy and it has ruching around the stomach. Pair it with a cute jacket or sweater and some heels and you’ll be feeling great!

greendress

Another great dress for post pregnancy. I love this dress because it comes in a ton of colors and can be so easily dressed up with heels or dressed down with a long sweater and some flats.

jeans

Let’s talk jeans. You can’t really wear them after a c-section. These jeans are amazing. They’re actually jeggings! They looks so much like real jeans {which is hard to find in a pair of jeggings} and they’re super comfortable and high waisted. So if you want to look put together, but also want to be comfy… these jeggings are where it’s at.

wrapsweater

This wrap sweater is everything! I wore it so often right after my c-section. It’s so great because it completely covers your stomach with a drapey front. Right after I gave birth to Amelia, I wore a binder around my belly to hold my incision tight. The binder was kind of bulky and I loved that when I had to leave the house I could easily throw this sweater over my nursing tank and I was good to go!

shoes

I love these Steve Madden sneakers. They’re super cute and comfy. Best of all, they’re slip on’s! These are great during pregnancy {since you literally can’t bend over to put on a pair of shoes, lol}, but also after. If you have a c-section, these are a must. If you don’t, they’re still awesome because all mama’s are always rushing around and could use an easy and effortlessly cute slip on sneaker!

Okay ladies, I am ALWAYS shopping. I would love to share all of my great finds and deals with you, so let me know if you’re interested in a page on my website dedicated to my finds that I think all mama’s would love!

Let me know if there’s a piece of clothing you couldn’t live without postpartum! I love hearing from you guys!!

Why my partner makes me a better mother

5-hearts

In honor of February, the month of love, I thought I would take this opportunity to gush over how amazing my fiancé is. Let me just give those of you who don’t know me some back story. Neil and I met in our sophomore year of high school and started dating shortly after that. I had never in my life been treated with such adoration and respect. And that’s when he was 16! He would do anything to make me happy, and that hasn’t changed to this day. It was so easy to fall in love with him. I always say, “we grew up together”… because when you meet at 16 years old, and go through high school, college, deaths, divorces, homes, long distance, etc. with someone, you grow into the person that you are now – together. He has consistently been my rock in this crazy life. He’s my goofy best friend and at the same time my serious and hard working partner. If you can’t already tell… I adore him.

Becoming a mom has been amazing, and it’s so fun to experience all of these moments with him. But becoming and being a mom is also really hard and trying on a relationship. After having a c-section, I can’t even imagine women who have to go through it alone. Having a partner who will stay up late with a screaming baby, change all the diapers, take them off your hands when you just can’t deal anymore… it makes a world of difference. Having a baby is such hard work, I really had no idea just how hard it can be physically and emotionally. Neil has been my biggest supporter and constantly tells me what a good mother I am to our daughter and how he feels so lucky to have me raising her. When you have spit up on your shirt, haven’t showered in 3 days, and you can barely hold your eyes open, that is just the best thing to hear. It makes all the difference in the world.

I have a partner who supports me and doesn’t consider it “a woman’s job” to take care of the baby. He takes a lot off of my plate. He gives me time to be me sometimes, instead of just mom-ing 24/7. He encourages me to read, take a bath, go shopping, or just get out of the house. When I’m not overwhelmed, tired, and stressed, I am such a better mother. I could never thank him enough for all that he does for me.

Okay guys, what does your partner do to help you out?

What do you mama’s do in your free time?

I love hearing from you!!

Happy February!!

Top 10 Best Baby Products

There are so many baby products on the market these days. When I got pregnant, I immediately started looking at baby products and I felt so overwhelmed. There are so many products and so many different brands of each product. How are we, as new moms, supposed to know which is best? I spent so much time researching products before purchasing them for ourselves. So after testing out a ton of baby gear and baby products, I’ve compiled a list of my top ten products with my own personal reviews on each!

mamaroo

1. 4moms Mamaroo Swing
Alright, this swing is an absolute life saver! That’s why it is #1 on my list.
First of all, the mamaroo has a sleek design. I really try to avoid baby gear that has lots of crazy colors. { I got the plain black mamaroo, but it comes in a few other colors } Second, this swing is super high tech. It has 6 different swing settings, like car ride & kangaroo. It also has music, which I think is so cool. It has a few options, like white noise and a lullaby, but my personal favorite is playing my own music. You can plug your phone right into the swing and play your own music for your baby. Lastly, the swing is just super comfortable. Amelia falls asleep in it all the time. I can’t tell you enough… this is a must have. Being able to put Amelia in it and do stuff around the house has kept me sane and helped out so much!

dockatot

2. Dock-a-tot
Okay so this one we went back and forth with purchasing. If you haven’t heard of dock-a-tot, it’s a multifunctional lounger. It was originally created with co-sleeping in mind, but it has evolved to become so much more than that. It’s super cozy, it feels like your baby is getting hugged on all sides. I think for my baby, she feels more secure when she’s inside the dock-a-tot versus just being placed in her big crib. It’s also perfect to just throw on the couch and put your baby in when you’re doing things around the house. It also has the option of added a toy arch to keep your little one preoccupied. We personally love it because it’s so portable. If Amelia falls asleep in it on the couch, we can pick it up by the handles and move her to anther room where it’s quieter. We swear by this product. I also LOVE that you can buy different covers and they come in the cutest colors and patterns. Amelia was sleeping ~6 hours through the night by the time she was 1 month old. I don’t think that would have been possible without the dock-a-tot.

halobassinet

3. Halo Bassinet
The Halo bassinet is really popular. When I was looking at bassinets, there weren’t very many options. This seemed like a no-brainer. After having an unexpected c-section, I was so glad we had this product. The Halo bassinet sits on a stand and hovers over the edge of the bed. It can be swiveled 360 degrees around and the sides can be easily pushed down for picking up your baby while sitting in bed. I love that it has a few extra features built in, like the fact that it vibrates and has a light to shine on your baby when you can’t see them in the dark. The Halo bassinet is not a “must have” but I can definitely say that it’s worth the money, especially if you have a c-section. It makes your life a little bit easier. And in the middle of the night, when you’re running on an empty tank, not having to get out of bed to get your baby makes all the difference in the world.

seadreamsoother

4. Baby Einstein Sea Dreams Soother
The sea dreams soother SAVES LIVES. I swear by this thing. Amelia could be screaming bloody murder, but the second I turn this thing on and it catches her attention, she is happy as a clam. I love that it has different noise options {our favorite is the white noise}. The sea dreams soother is better than just any old sound machine because Amelia gets so mesmerized from watching the little underwater creatures moving around in there. It’s also great because it comes with a strap for you to attach it to your baby’s crib.

hatch

5. Hatch Baby Scale
Okay, when I was pregnant I thought having a baby scale was so unnecessary. Why would I need a scale? They weigh her every time we go to the doctors anyways! Boy was I wrong. When we first brought Amelia home, she wasn’t gaining the weight that the doctors wanted her to. The pediatrician wanted me to bring her in 3 times a week just to weigh her. While recovering from a c-section, and running on no sleep, that just wasn’t ideal. We decided to get the Hatch baby scale. It’s one of the coolest gadgets we have. It’s super convenient because it doubles as a changing pad, so every morning when I change Amelia out of her jammies, I just go on the app on my phone and I can check her weight. The app is really cool, too. You can save your baby’s weight whenever you take it, and you can take their picture for that day. It’s cool to scroll through the days and see pictures of when your baby was smaller. The app also shows what percentile your baby is in for their age and weight. It has a lot of other features as well, like recording their feedings, sleep, and diaper changes if that’s something you want to keep track of. Again, it’s not something that you NEED to have, but it’s super convenient, and a small sense of relief when you see your baby gaining the weight that they should be!

pipa

6. Nuna Pipa Carseat
I couldn’t say enough good things about this infant carseat. Nuna always has top notch products. Besides the fact that the pipa looks extremely fancy, it’s one of the safest infant carseats on the market. That’s what sold me. The base for the pipa has an extra leg that stretches down to the floor of your car, stabilizing your carseat. The pipa is also extremely lightweight, weighing in at 7.9 lbs. Amelia loves this carseat, and she falls asleep the second we put her in it. She seems so cozy. I love that this carseat comes with an infant insert. The insert supports your baby when they’re still tiny, and then you can remove it and they can grow with their carseat. Last, but certainly not least, this carseat is a breeze to install. It took us about 3 minutes to install it. And there are levels on each side of the base to show you that it’s installed properly. We love it and highly recommend this carseat for your infant!!

diaper bag

7. Skiphop Chelsea Diaper Bag
Skiphop is another one of my favorite brands. All of their products have such clean and neutral designs. The Chelsea diaper bag is, in my opinion, the best diaper bag on the market. It’s plain black, which I love. I’m all about the all black everything. This diaper bag also doesn’t even look like a diaper bag. It’s really chic and could be worn with your sweats or worn when you’re all dressed up. It has lots of pockets on the inside and on the outside which is nice because I like all my stuff to be separated. Love this!!

bamboobies

8. Bamboobies
Okay, let’s get real here ladies. If you breastfeed, you NEED boob pads. It’s just not optional. I’ve tried a few different kinds, but the Bamboobies are the best by far. These pads have a super soft fabric on one side, and then a tougher fabric on the other. The fabrics that make up the Bamboobies make them as good as they are. I’ve tried other pads that are 100% cotton and milk just leaks through and ends up getting on my shirt anyways. What’s the point?! The fabric on the back side of the Bamboobies traps the milk in there so it doesn’t get to your shirt. These are much more expensive than other brands of boob pads, but you don’t need as many… and they actually work! Unless you want people staring at you in the grocery store for having wet circles on your shirt, I suggest you pick yourself up some Bamboobies.

halosleep

9. Halo Sleep Sack
Sleep sacks are hard to say they’re a “must have” because some babies just can’t stand being swaddled like that. Neil and I call them “straight jackets” because that’s really what they are! But if your baby can tolerate being put in a sleep sack, I highly recommend the Halo brand sleep sacks. When I was pregnant and looking online at sleep sacks, I liked the Halo ones but they were just so much more expensive than any other brand. I ended up buying different brands initially. I ended up getting a Halo sleep sack for free from the hospital where I delivered. We have about 5 off brand sleep sacks, and one Halo sleep sack. We use the Halo every single night. It just holds Amelia in there so much tighter and more secure. Once your babe starts moving and kicking, they will easily squirm their way out of most sleep sacks. The Halo is escape proof. Personally, we love swaddling Amelia before bed. Sometimes if she isn’t wearing one, she will wake herself up by squirming or flinching from a noise she hears and that’s the end of nap time. Having the sleep sack on her prevents that from happening and the Halo is just the most reliable for staying on her and keeping her calm!

ergo

10. ErgoBaby
Baby carriers are so great! I love baby wearing. Amelia loves to be held, and sometimes I can’t put her down all day and I get nothing done. Of coarse sometimes I don’t mind sitting on the couch all day cuddling with my daughter {who doesn’t} but there are just things that need to get done sometimes! The ErgoBaby is so great because it’s really easy to put on and to get your baby into, it has an infant insert that you can get so that you can start using it right away, and it has extra padding on your shoulders for when your babe starts to grow and gets heavy! We started off with just a baby wrap. Let me tell you… those things are a pain. They’re hard to put on, they’re hard to get your baby in and out of, and in my opinion you can really only use them when your babe is really small. Once they get bigger, wraps are just not as sturdy. We have the ErgoBaby 360 Cool Air. I like that it’s breathable for parent and baby!

So that’s all of them! My top 10 favorite baby products!!
I would absolutely love to hear from you guys on what your favorite baby products are. I’m always looking for things that make mom life easier and more convenient!

My Birth Story

Hey guys!!!

For my first blog I thought I would just tell you guys about my birth experience.

As a first time mom {and as a control freak lol} I did so much research and reading throughout my pregnancy as to prepare myself for Amelia’s birth. Everything I read said that you can plan as much as you want, but when it comes down to it, it’s just out of your hands. That was the understatement of the century.

Up until I was about 38 weeks pregnant, I planned on having an all natural birth. No pain meds for labor, no epidural, nothing. When I went to my doctors that week, they told me that my baby was breech. For those of you who don’t know, that means that her head was up in my ribs and her feet were facing down. I had to face reality… I was going to have to have a c-section. I had been planning for almost 9 months for this birth, and I hadn’t researched or read one single thing about c-section births because it just wasn’t a thought in my mind. I planned for an all natural birth. I had one week until the surgery, and I came to discover that during a c-section, there really is not much in your control at all.

Okay, I just want to give a heads up to moms reading… I did not have a good experience with my c-section. I don’t think it was horrible, but it just isn’t something that I wanted and I didn’t feel comfortable with the whole thing. I had never had surgery before, or any major medical procedures at all.

So we arrived at the hospital the morning it was scheduled and went into triage. This is where they prepped me for surgery. I had a bad experience with getting an IV started right from the get-go. There were 5 nurses, 2 anesthesiologists, and my doctor all surrounding me in this little room poking at me from all angles trying to find a good vein to start my line. They ended up putting my IV in the top of my foot! {Ouch!!} Then it just got more scary from there. Neil wasn’t allowed into the operating room until I was all set up and had already received my spinal tap. So I walked in the OR wearing nothing but my gown, and they had me crawl up onto the small metal operating table and they had me sit up with my legs straight out in front of me. There were about 6 people running around this small room, hooking me up to machines, putting a catheter in me, and giving me my spinal tap. That was probably the scariest part of the whole experience. I was in a room full of strangers and I couldn’t move any part of my body. They would just move me around and they got everything all set up before Neil came in. Once he was there I felt so much better.

The actual surgery was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I didn’t feel any pain at all, it was just very uncomfortable, because I could feel some pulling inside my body. I could feel when my doctor pulled Amelia’s body out of mine. It was the craziest feeling in the world. Once she was out, my doctor showed her to us over the drape that was in front of me and that was it. I don’t mean to sound cliché, but she was the most beautiful and perfect baby I had ever seen. They cleaned her off and gave her to Neil and we were both just in tears because we couldn’t believe that she was all ours.

The next few days in the hospital were a whirlwind and I don’t remember much of it because it was all a blur. I was on a lot of pain meds {absolutely necessary} and we were both running on basically zero sleep. But the whole experience was just the coolest and craziest thing either of us had been through. Nothing was what we expected it to be. But we went home a few days later with our gorgeous bundle of joy!!

If you guys have any questions, I would love to answer them! Let me know if you want me to make another post that talks about c-section recovery because that is a whole other battle that moms have to go through. I really don’t know how I made it through while taking care of a newborn!

Also, I would LOVE to read about your experiences! Comment below!!

Thanks for reading my birth story!!
